Health Precautions You Should Take Before You Paint Your House

As you prepare to take on the task of painting your home, it is important that you keep in mind the fact that you will be working with chemicals that are toxic and dangerous to your health.  Paint contains a number of ingredients that can harm you if you are overexposed.  Therefore, part of your paint job preparation time should be dedicated to protecting your safety.  Here are some health precautions you should take before you paint your house:

Removing old paint.  As you may or may not know, paint used to contain lead, before it was discovered that lead is extremely poisonous to humans.  Therefore, houses that are several decades old may be painted with lead paint.  If you know that you will be removing several layers of old paint and you’re not sure of how old the oldest layer is, you should have the proper authorities come to your house and test the paint for lead.

Proper ventilation.  If you are going to paint an indoor space, then it is extremely important that you ventilate the area as much as possible.  This means opening all doors and windows, and even turning on the ventilation fan, if there is one.  Also, turn off your air conditioning while you are painting.  Your air conditioning unit does not provide ventilation; instead, it moves the paint fumes throughout your home. Continue to ventilate the painted area up to three days after the paint is dry.

Choose safer paint.  Water based (acrylic) paint is less toxic than oil-based paint, so you should use a water-based paint whenever possible.  Also, it is better to use a brush paint than a spray paint, as it is easy to mistakenly breathe in spray paint, especially if you are down-wind from it.

Keep paint away from flames.  Some types of paint are highly combustible.  Therefore, you should be very careful to keep your paint and supplies away from flames.  This means turning off the fireplace and smoking elsewhere.

Painting your home is a big job.  It takes time, patience, and attention to detail – not to mention a good amount of manual labor.  If you are facing a painting project that you’re not sure you want to tackle on your own, you can call on the experienced professionals at AtoZ Painting to get the job done right.
